Apple’s “Hi, Speed” Event – The Biggest Announcements
Apple’s “Hi, Speed” event was held yesterday at 10:30 PM in India. The event was 1 hour and 11 minutes long. Apple unveiled a lot of new stuff, including the new iPhone 12 Series which was hyped quite a lot for the past few months. Here is a summary of all the products Apple announced in the event.
1. iPhone 12 Series.
This time, in the new iPhone 12 series, there are 4 devices – iPhone 12 mini, the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max. All the 4 models have a new design, similar to the old iPhone 4 style. All the iPhones come with 5G support and iOS 14 out-of-the-box.
The iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max come with Super Retina XDR OLED displays — featuring a Ceramic Shield glass cover on top. The new models are also powered by the A14 Bionic processor that is already available on the latest iPad Air and comes with the fourth-generation Neural Engine.
The new A14 Bionic chip is said to give a 40% boost in CPU performance and a 30% improvement in graphics over the existing A13 Bionic chip. Also, the new 16-core Neural Engine is said to be capable of performing up to 11 trillion operations per second. There are also second-generation machine learning accelerators in the CPU to provide 10 percent faster machine learning calculations over the previous-generation Neural Engine.
The iPhone 12 mini comes in a 5.4″ size, while the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro has the same 6.1″ display and the iPhone 12 Pro Max is the biggest in the series, with 6.7″ screen size.
The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 feature 12MP main and a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with an f/1.6 aperture and f/2.4 aperture respectively.
The iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max offer a triple rear camera setup that includes a 12MP (f/1.6) sensor, a 12MP ultra-wide (f/2.4), and a 12MP telephoto (f/2.0 on Pro and f/2.2 on Pro Max) lens. They also include a LiDAR (a portmanteau of light and radar) scanner for better autofocus in low light and Night-mode Portraits, improved depth photography, and augmented reality (AR) measurements.
The company is also rolling out a new Apple ProRAW format on the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. Apart from the Photos app, third-party apps will also be able to use the new image format thanks to the API. The ‘Pro’ iPhone 12 models also offer 4K Dolby Vision HDR video recording.
The iPhone 12 Pro offers 4x optical zoom while the iPhone 12 Pro Max offers 5x optical zoom with the telephoto sensor. All four models feature 12MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture.
In terms of battery life, the iPhone 12 mini is claimed to deliver up to 15 hours of video playback, while the iPhone 12 is rated to offer up to 17 hours video playback – the same as the iPhone 12 Pro. The iPhone 12 Pro Max is said to deliver up to 20 hours of video playback.
They support MagSafe wireless charging at up to 15W, and Qi wireless charging at up to 7.5W. The iPhone 12 series will be shipped without an AC adapter in the box. It comes with a USB-C to Lightning cable. This was previously rumored a few weeks ago.

Pre-orders for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro start October 16 in the US, the UK, Japan, Germany, China, and Australia, and goes on sale from October 23. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will go up for pre-orders starting November 6 in the US, with availability set for November 13.
In India, South Korea, and 12 more countries, the iPhone 12 will go on sale from October 30. The availability of all the models except the iPhone 12 in India has yet to be revealed.
2. HomePod Mini
Apple expanded its smart speaker lineup by launching the new HomePod Mini. The new HomePod mini is smaller than the original model with a new rounded shape.
The HomePod mini is powered by the Apple S5 processor, which is also found in the Apple Watch Series 5. It will also include a U1 chip to enable Ultra Wideband support. This is said to allow for better spatial awareness and accurately tracking the distance between another device with a U1 chip which includes iPhones and Apple Watch models.
The HomePod mini uses the location information for taking care of things like brightness, media controls, volume controls, door locks, and more. It can also alert you when a device has been taken from your home.
the smart speaker comes with Siri and you can ask the voice assistant to play music from multiple music streaming apps. For speakers, the HomePod mini has two tweeters and a touch-sensitive surface on the top that allows users to control the volume.
The HomePod Mini is priced at Rs. 9,900 in India, while in the US, it is priced at $99 (approximately Rs. 7,300) It comes in two color options – White and Space Grey. It can be pre-ordered starting November 6 in India and the sale starts on November 16.
Apple has reintroduced MagSafe charging in the form of wireless charging pads for the new iPhone 12 lineup. There are two different options: the MagSafe Charger for charging one device at a time and the MagSafe Charger Duo for charging two at a time, including a flip-up spot to charge your Apple Watch.
The newly announced iPhone 12, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max all feature magnets on the rear to help align compatible wireless chargers, but these can also be used as mounting points for other accessories such as cases. Third-party brands including Belkin will also soon unveil their own MagSafe accessories including charging docks and car adapters.
The new MagSafe chargers are Qi standard compliant and deliver up to 15W, so will work with other Qi devices regardless of magnetic alignment.
The new MagSafe charger is priced at Rs. 4,500 in India and it will be available starting October 16. Pricing and availability information for the MagSafe Duo accessory have not yet been announced.
Apple will also sell silicone cases in eight colors and clear plastic cases for the iPhone 12 series, priced at Rs. 4,900 each. Leather cases will go on sale from November 6, but pricing is not known yet. The leather wallet is priced at Rs. 5,600 and it will also be on sale in four colors starting October 16.
